But...What Is a Specialty Lab Kit?

A specialty lab kit is a prepackaged collection system prepared by a laboratory or testing company for a particular test. It may contain collection tubes, labels, paperwork, packaging materials, and instructions for handling or shipping the specimen. Some kits are simple, while others require precise timing, centrifugation, refrigeration, freezing, or same-day shipment. The kit usually provides the materials, but the patient may still need a qualified professional to perform the blood draw and complete the required specimen-handling steps.

Some kits have specific collection tubes. Others require a strict order of draw, detailed labeling, centrifugation, refrigeration, freezing, timed handling, or shipment within a particular window. Even kits that appear simple can become frustrating when patients are left trying to find someone willing—and properly equipped—to complete the collection.

That is where ABOLabs comes in.

ABOLabs provides mobile and in-office specialty kit collections throughout Colorado and portions of southern Wyoming. Depending on the kit instructions and service location, our team can assist with the blood draw, labeling, processing, packaging, temporary specimen holding, and shipment preparation required by the ordering laboratory or healthcare provider.

This list is not exhaustive. If your laboratory or kit company is not shown, that does not automatically mean we cannot complete the collection. We review unfamiliar kits individually to confirm that we have the appropriate supplies, equipment, processing capabilities, storage conditions, and shipping instructions before accepting the appointment.

Why specialty kits can be difficult

Many traditional patient service centers limit which outside kits they will accept. A patient may have a valid order and a fully supplied kit but still struggle to find a collection location willing to draw it.

Mobile collection adds another layer. The collector must understand not only phlebotomy but also specimen integrity, temperature requirements, time limits, packaging, documentation, and chain-of-custody expectations.

Every kit is different

The laboratory’s written instructions always control the collection and handling process. ABOLabs does not independently determine which tests a patient needs or whether a specimen remains clinically viable. Those decisions belong to the ordering provider and receiving laboratory.

Before scheduling, we may request photographs or copies of the kit instructions so we can confirm:

• What tubes and materials are included
• Whether additional supplies are needed
• How the specimens must be processed
• Required storage temperatures
• Shipping or courier deadlines
• Whether the patient has a completed laboratory order

Sending this information ahead of time helps prevent delays, missing materials, or an unsuccessful collection.

At home or in our Northglenn office

Patients may schedule an in-office kit draw at our Northglenn location or request mobile service when available. Mobile pricing varies by location, travel requirements, kit complexity, and any processing or specimen-logistics needs.
